Bio

I’m Vanessa. I am an American speech-language pathologist (SLP) with a private practice in Valencia, Spain. I specialise in supporting communication challenges in individuals with a wide clinical range of speech and language issues and across the age span and even languages of origin. Involvement of the English language is the factor my clients all have in common. English may be one of the [many] languages they use at home, the language of instruction in school, and is most often a beneficial context within which we do our therapeutic work. I can provide intervention in English and Spanish, yet I take a multilingual approach to therapy with every case— meaning that all of the client’s languages are taken into account when planning assessments and intervention.

Throughout my career, I have enjoyed a diverse portfolio as a speech-language pathologist and educator in the USA, Singapore and Spain. My professional responsibilities have evolved over time, and I am grateful for each new challenge that has stretched my clinical skills. My passions are helping clients develop their communication skills while supporting parents and caregivers, as well as collaborating with other professionals to construct nurturing environments for learning and interaction.

As a school-based speech language therapist, I have not only provided clinical services directly to students, but also served in clinical education, supervisory and management roles. I also created learning content as an adjunct University professor and workshop presenter.

Building relationship with clients holds primary importance in my therapeutic perspective. I attend to client interests, letting them take the lead to build trust. This also helps increase motivation to participate. Likewise, with adolescents and adults, I make sure they can make clear links to know how what we do in intervention connects to other aspects of their lives.

As time goes, we work to build that bridge between practicing new skills in highly motivating activities, to later using those skills, once solidified, in more challenging academic, social, or speaking situations, which may not always be fun. It’s hard work! But given a strong foundation of relationship and trust, the clients bravely make progress.
